Constipation in Children

Constipation means having infrequent, hard, or painful bowel movements. It’s common in children and can cause discomfort, abdominal pain, or even fear of going to the toilet. Most cases are temporary and treatable with changes in diet, routine, and hydration.

Common Signs of Constipation

  • Fewer than 3 bowel movements per week
  • Hard, dry, or pellet-like stools
  • Straining or pain during bowel movements
  • Stomach pain or bloating
  • Soiling/accidents (due to overflow around hard stool)
  • Child may avoid going to the toilet or hide when needing to go

Causes of Constipation in Children

  1. Low Fiber Diet
    • Not enough fruits, vegetables, or whole grains
  2. Inadequate Fluid Intake
    • Not drinking enough water slows down bowel movements
  3. Toilet Avoidance
    • Some kids avoid using unfamiliar or school toilets
  4. Toilet Training Stress
    • Pressure or early training can lead to withholding behavior
  5. Lack of Physical Activity
    • Movement helps keep the digestive system active
  6. Change in Routine
    • Travel, illness, or starting school can disrupt bowel habits
  7. Medical Conditions (Less common)
    • Conditions like hypothyroidism, celiac disease, or Hirschsprung’s disease

When to See a Doctor

See a Pediatric Gastroenterologist if:

  • Constipation lasts more than 2 weeks
  • Your child has pain, vomiting, or blood in the stool
  • There’s weight loss, poor appetite, or growth issues
  • Over-the-counter changes are not helping
